Intended Uses
This sewing kit is intended for use with light and medium weight fabrics and threads. Each tool in the kit has a specific purpose:
- Pencils: For marking measurements and lines on fabric. Typically, the white is best for darker fabrics, and the blue is best for lighter fabrics.
- Thread snips: For trimming loose and tail threads, and for cutting very short lengths of fabric, like trimming corners or clipping notches. They are designed for small, fine, precise cuts.
- Small scissors: For cutting small lengths of light or medium weight fabric, like cutting patches.
- Stitch ripper: For cutting and removing stitches from a seam. Also known as seam ripper.
- Ribbon tape measure: For measuring lengths on curved or uneven surfaces.
- Thimble: For protecting your thumb or finger when hand sewing. It prevents you from pricking yourself with the needle.
- Needle threader: For helping you put thread through the eye of a needle.
- Pins: For holding fabric in place before sewing, like when you have positioned fabric a patch, a hem, or a seam.
- Needles: For making stitches in fabric. The needles in this kit are all for hand sewing. Several different types of needles are included:
- Sharps: For general stitches. Also known as general purpose needles.
- Betweens: For fine, detailed stitches. Also known as quilting needles.
- Darners: For mending.
- Tapestry: For stitching knits and knitwear, or for doing cross stitch or needlepoint. Also known as cross stitch needles.
- Chenille: For making decorative stitches on heavy weight fabrics, like denim, or for making decorative stitches in ribbon or crewel embroidery.
- Embroidery: For making decorative or general stitches. Embroidery needles are like Sharps, but with a much larger eye to accommodate larger thread.
