Intended Uses
Mostly used for drilling smallish holes (less than 1 inch) into concrete and masonry, this item can also be used for drilling into wood and steel. The more powerful cousin to the hammer drill is the Rotary Hammer Drill, capable of making larger holes in hardened concrete, as well as, acting like a small jackhammer.
How it works (according to Katelin Hill and Bob Beacham of Bob Vila): “While the drill rotates, a gear-driven cam introduces a linear striking motion along the path of the drill bit. In effect, it combines chiseling and drilling in the same tool.”
Special Instructions
If you are using this item to drill into concrete, be sure to use a masonry bit (usually has a carbide tip) for hammer drills!
